I loved reading this! I think what I enjoyed the most was the difference between the manga and the anime。 There was more of Shinji's thoughts in the manga and it was really interesting to understand his thought process during it。 Otherwise, there are minor differences between the manga and anime, however, I think it is worth the read。 I loved reading this!

This provides an interesting take on Evangelion。 It is not a straight adaptation of the anime。 Many characters are changed, in my opinion not all for the better。 The biggest example is my favorite character of all time, Shinji Ikari。 Shinji in the anime is fundamentally a good, shy, and sensitive guy。 Manga Shinji is sort of an ass。 Some might like he is a bit more head strong and has a bit more of a backbone, but Shinji is great because of his flaws。 Rei, my third favorite character, is changed This provides an interesting take on Evangelion。 It is not a straight adaptation of the anime。 Many characters are changed, in my opinion not all for the better。 The biggest example is my favorite character of all time, Shinji Ikari。 Shinji in the anime is fundamentally a good, shy, and sensitive guy。 Manga Shinji is sort of an ass。 Some might like he is a bit more head strong and has a bit more of a backbone, but Shinji is great because of his flaws。 Rei, my third favorite character, is changed only a little。 Rei is much more cold in some ways to her anime self。 Makes me wonder why Sadamoto cut out the slap。 In the anime during this time, Rei is interested and intrigued by Shinji, while in the Manga it seems like she is annoyed he is at NERV。 The rest of the characters are pretty much the same besides one of my other favorites, Gendo。 Gendo in the anime no doubt is a bad dad, but Manga Gendo makes him seem like the best one of all time。 Manga Gendo is just straight up evil。 The point of Gendo is he is pretty much a messed up grown version of Shinji。 He's a bad day because he is afraid of hurting and being hurt by Shinji。 The reason Gendo talks so little is that he is socially awkward like his son。I would say that the localization made a horrible choice in giving Toji his accent。 I know Toji has a regional Japanese accent, but did they have to do that for the English translationThe plot is pretty much the same as the anime's first six episodes, or the first Rebuild film。 Most plot changes are related to Shinji's change in character。 The things I liked the most were the dream sequences。 The ones with the naked Unit 01 is legitimately creepy and I wouldn't of minded them in the original show。 The art is great, regardless of the man, Sadamoto is an excellent artist。 Even though I prefer the anime and Rebuild's treatment of this arc of the story, I still enjoyed it as its own thing, which is how Sadamoto recommends, and look forward to seeing what comes next。 。。。more

So first of all, this manga isn’t the sort that I would usually want to read, as I’m not into mecha and having a depressed (or similar) main character from the start。 That is not to say anything about the quality of the manga, but just a matter of my own personal preference。 Taking that into consideration though, this is pretty much a classic manga, seeing as plenty have people that read manga or watch anime have probably at least heard of this series。 As with many other classic series, I was in So first of all, this manga isn’t the sort that I would usually want to read, as I’m not into mecha and having a depressed (or similar) main character from the start。 That is not to say anything about the quality of the manga, but just a matter of my own personal preference。 Taking that into consideration though, this is pretty much a classic manga, seeing as plenty have people that read manga or watch anime have probably at least heard of this series。 As with many other classic series, I was interested to see why it was such a well known manga。 Without giving too much away, I found this well made, and as I’ve read through it, parts have been incredibly emotive, and I’ve already been able to see that the characters that have been introduced so far are gradually shown to have depth and be multifaceted in regards to their personality and such。 Even with it being a manga that was first published in 1995 (?), it is still interesting and engaging now。 To anyone considering possibly reading this series, even to individuals who may not be into mecha series, I would definitely recommend it after reading this so far (which in this book contains the first 3 volumes)! 。。。more

Startet the year off watching the entire NGE series on Day One, so I thought it's high time I tackled the manga again, and finished it this time。 Definitely more fun to read right after the anime, the differences between the two are much clearer this way。 Not sure which kind of timing I'll end up preferring。。。on to volume 2! I have an old memory, as a 14 or 15-year-old, when a channel in Australia called SBS started airing subtitled / subbed anime。 Possibly their second show (after "Akira") happened to be a post-apocalyptic anime named "Neon Genesis Evangelion"。 I would be hooked on that show, and others of the medium from that point onwards。So, reading the manga pretty much elicited the same feelings of excitement, though tempered with a more adult view of things。 Shinji Akari, the protagonist of this series, start I have an old memory, as a 14 or 15-year-old, when a channel in Australia called SBS started airing subtitled / subbed anime。 Possibly their second show (after "Akira") happened to be a post-apocalyptic anime named "Neon Genesis Evangelion"。 I would be hooked on that show, and others of the medium from that point onwards。So, reading the manga pretty much elicited the same feelings of excitement, though tempered with a more adult view of things。 Shinji Akari, the protagonist of this series, starts out as a very apathetic young man of 14 years (coincidentally, the same age as I was when I first delved into the world of anime)。 He's been living with his aunty and uncle, who has been caring for him since his father, Gendo Akari, foisted Shinji onto them。 Compounding the rejection from his father, his mother is also no longer in the picture。 So he's had to deal with parental rejection by shielding himself (and his heart) in a shell of apathy so that no one could ever hurt him emotionally。The world is also very much a traumatised one, where in the year 2000, a traumatic event dubbed The Second Impact, wiped out almost half of the world's population。 15 years later, in 2015, Angels have suddenly appeared once more - which is where the story begins。On a character level, I don't think that Shinji appreciates how much the adults in his life (primarily Gendo, but also Misato) have been manipulating him, rejecting him when he didn't want to be a pilot for the eponymous Evangelion, knowing full well that eventually, he would be interested enough to remain a pilot。 For that matter, Shinji has also been testing the people around him, rejecting them as a way to prove that "see, they don't want you around anyways" before he connected too deeply, only to be rejected。 I find that concept fascinating。 Especially moreso since the need and desire for human connection and belonging is so much an integral facet of what it means to be human。 Adding to that are the machinations of NERV, as well as the shadowy figures aiding Gendo Akari。 I know that there's more to come, but I'm hoping that I'll finally obtain some sort of clarity as to what happens in the end。 (I only watched the 26-episode series, and have never watched the OVAs: "Death and Rebirth" and "The End of Evangelion", having pegged them as being too gory for me to handle)。At least the drawings by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto are aesthetically pleasing to look at, while I try to wrap my head around what I have found to be a very convoluted story。。。 :) 。。。more

First time reading this series。 I’m enjoying it so far。 I’m trying to take my time and read it slow to allow myself time to think about the story。 This edition has excerpts from the author and some actors after each novel。 It’s helping me to get a bit more meaning from the story。 Some of the action sequences are a bit difficult for me to understand all the movements, but that’s the only fault I’ve found with the series。

Lindsey

I really like this and all the extra material in the book。 It’s a different take on Annos anime, and I like it。

I have been in a serious Evangelion mood lately, having recently completed my first viewing of the original series and film for the first time in years。 I got roughly half way through the manga a few years ago but remembered almost nothing about it specifically。 There is a good amount of very subtle but interesting changes so far, the biggest to me being the way it emphasizes Shinji and Rei’s relationship。 Rei is humanized ever so slightly more already than in the anime which is neat。 Overall a I have been in a serious Evangelion mood lately, having recently completed my first viewing of the original series and film for the first time in years。 I got roughly half way through the manga a few years ago but remembered almost nothing about it specifically。 There is a good amount of very subtle but interesting changes so far, the biggest to me being the way it emphasizes Shinji and Rei’s relationship。 Rei is humanized ever so slightly more already than in the anime which is neat。 Overall a great edition (the spines for the whole series look incredible lined up together) with breathtaking artwork。 I don’t know if I would necessarily recommend this as an entry point to Evangelion (I think just starting with the original show is still the best method), but this is excellent regardless。 My only complaint about the book itself is that the paper seems to be just slightly too thin causing a LOT of page bleed, especially considering how much negative space/whiteness there is on many of the pages。 Flipping through later volumes, they seem to have rectified that issue, hopefully that will be the case。 。。。more

Suggest reading this after watching the anime。 It focuses much more on plot holes within the anime and character development rather than action。 Notes from the original voice actors give insight into the tv production。 This is also the first manga I have seen that gives a glossary for the onomatopoeia translations with index。 👍🏼

Neon genesis Evangeline vol 1This book has a lot to say。 In some ways I prefer this version over the anime, but the anime has a brilliance of its own。 A good read and it makes more sense。

As the acclaimed series, this piece is a genial landmark of science fiction, mecha and psychological manga! Rich characters, full of psychology/psychiatry concepts, beautiful design and a story so overwhelming that drifts our minds through the deepest meanings of being a human being and what is our purpose in the universe。

Mostly just a straight tie-in adaptation at this point。 Great art, though, for sure。 And the minor changes that are present are very welcome, notably Shinji and Rei forming a bond that's a little less dysfunctional than in the anime, and of course Pen-Pen's super important character backstory。But。。。 I'm seriously deducting a whole star for Toji's godawful Jersey accent。 I get that they're trying to translate a provincial accent, but。。。 it's almost unreadable。 Ugh。 Mostly just a straight tie-in adaptation at this point。 Great art, though, for sure。 And the minor changes that are present are very welcome, notably Shinji and Rei forming a bond that's a little less dysfunctional than in the anime, and of course Pen-Pen's super important character backstory。But。。。 I'm seriously deducting a whole star for Toji's godawful Jersey accent。 I get that they're trying to translate a provincial accent, but。。。 it's almost unreadable。 Ugh。 。。。more

Finally getting around to reading the comic for one of the most important pieces of media to my adolescent development。 It feels kind of like reviewing Star Wars—how am I supposed to do it objectively when there's so much history and emotion that comes along with it? It's fine, mostly follows the original story, but I don't really feel like it adds a ton。 Finally getting around to reading the comic for one of the most important pieces of media to my adolescent development。 It feels kind of like reviewing Star Wars—how am I supposed to do it objectively when there's so much history and emotion that comes along with it?

Interesting and different enough from the anime to make reading the series worth it。 Shinji seems to have a little more personality to me in this version。 Reading on a e reader so I am missing out on the colored pages, a slight disappointment。
